RYLAND

Red orders me to go with the others, but I can’t leave her alone. I’m prepared for her anger when I refuse, but I’m met with gratitude and relief instead. I step back into the shadows to watch her as she faces off with Amber. I don’t trust the bitch to be alone with my mate, but I want her to forget that I’m here.

The more they talk, the more anxious I get. I shift into my wolf form and wait for Red just inside the tree line of the clearing. I check in with the guys and find out what’s going on, then send Red a message along our bond. The groups are retreating. They’ve rescued as many as they could. James and Orym got Luca out. We need to go.

She backs away from Amber, heading toward me without turning her back on the witch. As soon as she’s close enough, I step forward and she jumps onto my back. We race through the forest, dodging magic attacks as we fight to get home.

I know that there are still more missing wolves, vamps, and humans. As annoyed as I am that we weren’t able to rescue them all, I’m happy we got as many out as we did. There has to be a way to stop Amber from coming into our territory, but I’m not sure what that would be.

Maybe Eli will know of something that would repel witches. Hopefully, it wouldn’t affect Red, since she’s half Fae. But there’s no way to know until we can have that conversation. I should focus more on where I’m going instead of how to stop these assholes from following us. After I almost slam into a tree, I shake my head and pay more attention to what I’m doing.

I get Red back to Gunnar’s place before letting her climb off my back. Then I shift and follow her as she walks to the training center. It’s the only place large enough to house the wounded and rescued, so it makes sense that they would have been taken there.

She heads inside, looking for Luca, I’m sure. I walk around the perimeter, making sure there are wolves at every entrance. Once I’m satisfied, I go inside and find my girl. “I don’t understand. He’s really not here? Where did they take him?”

“We’re not sure, but they didn’t come here with the rest of us.” I overhear the conversation, and rush to Red’s side.

“Let’s head home and see if they took him there. James has medical training. He’ll be able to take care of Luca. If they aren’t at home, we’ll start searching.” I wrap my arm around her shoulder and guide her to the exit.

“Do you really think James and Orym would have taken him home instead of here?” Concern laces with her words and tugs at my heart. I know that she’s hurting because Luca is injured. I have to ease her worries.
